Snacks

We are writing to ask for your cooperation on student snacks. It is crucial for primary school students to eat regularly so they get steady energy and nutrients throughout the day, feel well, and can better focus on their lessons.
As a reminder, school rules require students to bring nutritious, energy-rich snacks to school — fruits, vegetables, whole grain bread with healthy toppings or similar items. Students often compare their snacks with each other, and this can cause social issues among students when some bring different types of snacks than what's recommended in school rules.
We follow recommendations from the Office of the Director of Health, which provide guidelines for morning snacks and show examples of suitable foods. See more details on the website: https://island.is/en/nutrition-recommendations
Guidelines for morning snacks:
Always bring to school: Fruits and vegetables such as apple slices, bananas, tangerines, grapes, mango, carrots, turnip sticks, cucumber slices, small tomatoes, etc.
Sometimes bring to school: Slightly higher-energy foods in addition to fruits and vegetables, such as cheese cubes, eggs, crispbread, oat rings, dried fruits like raisins or dates, etc. Plain yogurt/skyr in reusable containers.
For students who eat little for breakfast or who get very hungry before lunch: Sandwich, flatbread or crispbread along with vegetables or fruits. For example, whole grain bread, flatbread or crispbread with cottage cheese, cheese, tuna, hummus, caviar, liver pâté, eggs, banana or avocado.
Please note that we recommend that energy bars and fruit snacks not be included in lunches. As many people know, these products are high in sugar and preservatives. We also want to stress that juice boxes, soda, energy drinks and candy are not allowed in school.
Students are permitted to bring skyr and skyr drinks, as long as the containers go home with students. All containers go back home with students in their school bags along with leftover food.
