Practical information for parents at the start of the school year

Classes will then follow the class schedule starting Monday, Aug. 24.

Swimming lessons begin Monday, Aug. 24. Homeroom teachers will provide students with information about their swimming groups. The lessons take place at Dalslaug pool. Please note that students must bring their own swimwear, as none is available to borrow. Swimwear should not restrict swimming strokes and movement in the water.

 

Purchasing school supplies
School supplies are free in all the City's primary schools, so students receive all necessary learning materials at school up to a certain limit. We remind everyone to take good care of their materials. Students only need to have writing supplies (pencils, pens, colored pencils) to use at home.

 

Meal registration
Lunch at Reykjavík City primary schools is free.

Although parents no longer need to pay for lunch, everyone who wants to eat in the cafeteria must be enrolled in the meal plan. We ask parents to register students who want to participate in the meal program.

Students who participated in the meal program last school year will be automatically enrolled this school year. To enroll new students in the meal plan, please use the new meal portal: https://matur.vala.is/umsokn . The same process is used to unenroll students from the meal plan. 

As in previous years, we will offer students free oatmeal porridge in the mornings from 8 to 8:30 a.m., starting Monday, Aug. 24. Students need to bring water bottles to school. We also ask students to bring lunch in reusable lunch boxes and to take leftover food home with them, allowing parents to see what their child has eaten during the day.

 

Lockers
Students in grades 2-10 are assigned lockers located in the school's entrance hall. The lockers are unlocked, but students can bring locks from home to use at school. 

First-grade students will use the coat racks and cubbies located near their classroom.

 

Sports
During the first weeks, physical education will mostly take place outdoors, so students need to dress for the weather and ensure their clothes are comfortable and easy to move in. Of course, students can change clothes in the locker rooms before class. If the weather is bad, we'll move inside to the gymnasium.

Students must wear athletic clothing and shoes when classes move to the gymnasium. Students in 1st and 2nd grade are an exception and may participate in their socks. The youngest children may wear ballet slippers, but as mentioned, shoes are not allowed.

 

Bicycles and scooters
Bike racks are available on the school grounds for locking bicycles and scooters. They can be stored there during the school day at their own risk. There are no facilities for storing scooters inside the school. As a reminder, bikes and other wheeled vehicles are not permitted on school grounds during school hours for safety reasons.

 

Parent/guardian contact information in mentor
Please ensure your immediate family contact information in Mentor is up to date. Parents and guardians should update their details if phone numbers, email addresses, or other information have changed. Immediate family members can reach the school office by email at ingunnarskoli@reykjavik.is or by phone at 411-7828.

 

Younger children's choir
This school year, we will offer choir during school hours for students in grades 1-4, starting in September. Jóhanna Halldórsdóttir, TTS teacher and choir director, will send information to parents as the time approaches.

 

Electives for grades 8-10
The new elective arrangement will continue in Ingunnarskóli's upper primary division (Grades 8-10), where all students will pursue interest-based learning. Please note that students cannot receive credit for leisure activities outside school as an elective, as has been the case in previous years. However, students can arrange their extracurricular activities around this new schedule.

Students should expect their school day to end at 3:05pm on Mondays when interest-based learning is on the class schedule. Independent work is also planned for Wednesdays and Thursdays, which can be done at home (optional attendance).

We introduced students to this selection process last spring when they completed an interest survey.

This winter, each grade will have one or two homeroom teachers who will jointly manage the grade and serve as the primary contacts for parents.

Lost and found
You can check for lost and found items near the school's main entrance. We encourage parents to stop by regularly if a child is missing something. 

Because many items accumulate over the school year, we donate unclaimed belongings to charitable organizations three times annually. We will email parents before each donation date.

 

Absence notifications
Guardians or relatives should report illnesses or other short-term absences before class starts and then daily to the school office at 411-7828 or ingunnarskoli@reykjavik.is. Absences can also be reported through the parent access in Mentor.

 

School hours and start of classes
The school's main office is open from 7:45 am to 2:30 pm, and the school building opens at 8am. The main office is closed for lunch from 12:00 pm to 12:40 pm.

We offer supervised indoor care for students in grades 1-4 starting at 8 a.m.

Classes for grades 1-7 begin daily at 8:30 a.m., while grades 8-10 start at 8:50 a.m.
